Self Publishing & Sales

Self publishing your ebook or print book can be quite an experience.  And it can take an enormous amount of time to research and understand most of your options.  Today, we'll talk about two methods to get you on track.....

There are multitudes of options when it comes to how you go to market, whether you are self publishing an electronic book (ebook) or a print book.

One would think that it would be a pretty simple task to reserch those options and make some decisions.

Well, it is if you are not thorough.

Let's focus on the ebook side of the equation today.

Generally, and we mean this in all sincerity - it may take as much time to research and categorize your options, providers and methods as it does to write your ebook!  So the first thing you need to do is to set aside plenty of time and get organized.

Some key early decisions you'll need to make include:

  1. Do you want your own website?
  2. If not, how much in royalties are you willing to give up?
  3. Are you prepared to do marketing activities
  4. Are you willing to give control of your digital files to a "publisher"?
  5. What price points will you be seeking?
  6. What kinds and type of support are you willing to conduct?
These are but a few of the key questions.

The good news is there are myriads of options.

Over time, we will review several options for each of the main questions above.

Today, we want to highlight three choices for you.

First, the Writer's Closet is seeking new authors.  They are more of a traditional publisher, where you submit your manuscript to them, they review it and you may or may not get accepted.

Since they seem to be largely Internet based, you may have an excellent chance of being an author in their business.  You'll have to research on your own what their fees and royalty payouts are.

Next, is the do-it-yourself method with your own website.  Knowledge Download provides the self publish capabilities to build your own ebook selling website with a browser interface, online tutorials and responsive technical support.  They have hundreds of authors using their service and we can attest to their credibility and longevity.  With Knowlegde Download, you pay a small $14 a month fee and keep 100% of your sales (minus any ecommerce costs from Paypal or Clickbank).

Lastly, there is Lulu.com, which was founded by former President and CEO of Red Hat Software, Bob Young.  They are a combination of Knowledge Download type do-it-yourself and Writer's Closet traditional publishing.  Lulu allows you to use their site, software and systems, but takes 25% of your sales.  They provide you with your ebook to sell at a Lulu URL, which gets them plenty of promotions, but may cause your customers to wander away from your offering.

The landscape is full of providers like these, and more.  We'll discuss other business models in the self publish business in the days and weeks to come.
