eBook Self Publishing Downside

eBook Publisher | 11 January, 2005 20:12

There is always a downside to everything.  This is one of them in the ebook self publishing business.....
This article points out how unscrupulous people take advantage of intellectual property of an author.

For people who want to steal, they will find a way.  These losers are around in every industry, in every country and they're scum of the earth we all have to deal with.

So the question for publishers and authors is:  how much effort do you put into protecting your digital book and IP rights?

The answer from our perspective is:  it depends.

You have to weigh the value of your work and compare it to the amount of time, money and effort it takes to protect it.

There is a trade-off point and each author and publisher has to find that place for themselves.

Frankly, this is one of the uglier sides of this business, and it's still the driving fear of major book publishing firms.  They simply don't view the risk as worth the effort to lose control of their IP.

And in earlier years, we could understand that.  However, the ballooning revenues of the digital book publishing market is leaving a lot of money on the table for those publishers.

Never the less, while digital rights management tools, services and other protection schemes are out on the market, largely, they are too expensive for the self publishing market.

We will be tracking these developments over the year, so stay with us.  And be sure to post any comments or suggestions you may have!
