Get Rid Of College Textbooks!

eBook Publisher | 16 January, 2005 20:34

Yes, you heard that right.  What a thought, eh?  The publishers who rake college students and their financial supporters (usually Mom & Dad) over the coals would hate to see an ebook movement coming their way, wouldn't they?

But you know, why not?

In this article, Jason Roberts, a student at Oklahoma State University, argues for moving college textbooks to ebook format.

Hip - hip - hoorah!

My daughter is a junior at University of Arizona and we're paying the bill, at least thru her undergrad work.

And I'm here to tell you, it's a ton of bucks every semester that we fork out for textbooks.

Jason has it right - the publishers have a stranglehold.

But wait, let's not forget, most schools are publicly funded.  That means that taxpayers - you and I - can or should be able to get our publicly elected officials to make some changes.  After all, the book publishers only control the content of their books, not the mode, delivery, model or selling price.

Our legislators and ultimately school officials, who are State employees, should be able to move an initiative like this forward.

After all - ebooks are much more envionmentally safe, you can print any page you want, instead of the entire 25lb biology tome, and with the proper digital rights management software, publishers can absolutely prevent theft (as much as they can in the print world today).

Jason - if you read this - know you have a friend at the B2B eBook Conference.  Maybe we can make something happen!
