ISBN Numbers
eBook Publisher | 31 January, 2005 15:01
ISBN numbers are an international standard of cataloging books and ebooks, be they self published or published by a big New York publisher. Some recent changes may have you raise your head on ISBN's.
Here's a statement of what ISBN is:
The
ISBN is a unique machine-readable identification number, which
marks any book unmistakably. For 30 years the ISBN has revolutionized
the international book-trade. 159 countries and territories are
officially ISBN members. For a long time, ISBN numbers were 10 digits.
With the massive growth in the self publishing business, and accompanying expansion of new literary works, the National Information Standards Organization
, the body that produces and control's ISBN's, has moved to a 13 digit code now.
That is great news!
If you haven't yet registered for an ISBN number for your ebook or print book, you should do so.
The chief benefit of doing it is that your work will make it's way into the catalog of every major book distributor, with Ingram being the largest of them all.
The other big benefit of having your work registered with an ISBN is for credibility with your target audience.
