What Is Print On Demand Self Publishing?

eBook Publisher | 08 February, 2005 20:11

Building on yesterday's post, we'll discuss a little about "print on demand", which is one form of self-publishing.
Print on demand, or POD is more of a term used for the technology of printing a book when it needs to be shipped, than it is for a form of self publishing.

POD encompasses the latest in technology in digital printing.  A POD publisher generally represents themselves as such and you can determine that by seeing the fees and costs associated with getting your book published.

Traditional publishers on the other hand rarely advertise, will come to find you most of the time, and never have prices for their services on their websites.  In fact, most traditional publishers don't even want to hear from you.  They are deluged with unsolicited proposals and manuscripts.

POD publishers on the other hand want to help you, want to publish your book or printed report and are all too happy to talk to you.  They are selling a printing service, to be quite honest about it.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

As technology continues to advance into our everyday lives, more and more authors are more than ok with the idea of self publishing.  More and more consumers and business people are just fine with buying books and ebooks self published right off of a website.

So where's the rub?

That's for another day.

Meanwhile, don't let the term or phrase POD confuse you.  Just be aware that, like any form of self publishing, you're going to have to do your own marketing and promotions.
